SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY
Speech and language therapy provides treatment,
support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with
communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.
Speech therapy is an intervention
service that focuses on improving a child's speech and abilities to understand
and express language, including nonverbal language.
Speech therapy includes two components:
1.
Coordinating
the mouth to produce sounds to form words and sentences (to address
articulation, fluency, and voice volume regulation); and
2.
Understanding
and expressing language (to address the use of language through written,
pictorial, body, and sign forms, and the use of language through alternative
communication systems such as social media, computers, and iPads).
When do you require Speech and Language / or Speech Therapy:
1.
Articulation Disorders: When child or adult is unable to articulate or pronounce the speech sound
correctly. (Example- If child is speaking ‘boy’ he may say /toy/, /oy/,)
2.
Voice disorders: When child or adult’s voice is
inappropriate, such as breathy, harsh, hoarse voice. Some other voice problems
are like boy speaking like girl (Puberphonia), girls speaking like boy (Androphonia),
some of their voice looks like its comes through the nose (hypernasality) due
to cleft palate and lip.
3.
Fluency disorders (Haklana/
Tutlana):
is an interruption
in the normal speech flow by frequent repetitions or prolongations of speech
sounds, syllables, or words or by an individual’s inability to start a word. It
may be accompanied by rapid eye blinks, tremors of the lips and/or jaw or other
struggle behaviors that a person who stutters may use in an attempt to speak.
4.
Dysphagia/ Eating
Difficulties: is the difficulty in biting, chewing and swallowing. The child or adult
may have difficulties in eating and or drinking.
5.
Language
Disorders: Receptive (Understanding)- The child or adult is unable to
understand or identify the objects which are available in his or her day to day
routine. And also difficulties in understanding people saying to him or
following instructions.
Expressive (Speaking)- The child or adult is unable to speak with others. They are unable to put their words together to make phrases/ simple sentences during conversation.
